Mine S256

S256 uses the same SHA-256 proof of work as Bitcoin, so any Bitcoin ASIC can mine it. Point your miner at a pool, use your S256 address as the username, and you are mining.

Mining Pools

Sha256-Mining and Rodb’s pool both took part in testing S256 merged mining on testnet3 before v3.0.1.

VarDiff adjusts each miner’s difficulty, so the start difficulty only sets where it begins. Solo miners also merge-mine VMESH or ESF on the same hashes when they add vmesh= or esf= with their address to the password.

Run by RodB, who tested S256 merged mining with mkpool and helped get the v3.0.1 auxpow format right. The pool runs S256 Core v3.0.1.

A no-account, non-custodial solo pool for many SHA-256 coins; S256 has its own port. When your miner finds a block, its coinbase transaction has two outputs: 99% of the reward to the address you mine with and the 1% fee to the pool. The pool never holds your coins.

Coinbase payouts

The coinbase is the first transaction in every block: it creates the new block reward. Pools that pay in the coinbase write your address into that transaction, so the reward lands in your wallet the moment the block is mined, with no pool balance, payout threshold or withdrawal. A pool that splits the coinbase adds more outputs to the same transaction, for example its fee. Like every block reward, coinbase coins can be spent after 200 confirmations; until then your wallet shows them as immature.

Setup Guide

From a new wallet to your first payout in four steps.

  1. Get an S256 address

Install a wallet or open the web wallet and create a receiving address. S256 addresses start with s21 (bech32), S or 8. Pools pay to this address, so keep its keys or seed phrase backed up.

  2. Pick a pool and a port

Choose a pool above. On Sha256-Mining, pick the port whose start difficulty is closest to what your miner handles; a small miner goes on 50272, a large farm or rental on 50276. VarDiff tunes it from there.

  3. Configure your miner

In your ASIC’s pool settings, enter:

    URL
    stratum+tcp://sha256-mining.go.ro:50273
    Username
    your-s256-address.worker1
    Password
x for pool mining, m=solo to mine solo

The part after the dot is a worker name of your choice, so you can tell several miners apart.

  4. Watch shares and payouts

Within a few minutes the pool shows your hashrate. Block rewards unlock after S256’s coinbase maturity (200 blocks; the pool waits for 201 confirmations) and are then paid out with the next payment run.

Hardware

Any SHA-256 ASIC that mines Bitcoin mines S256: the block header and hashing are the same. GPU and CPU mining is not competitive. Rented SHA-256 hashrate works too; point the rental at a pool’s stratum URL.

Solo with your own node

Run sha256coind with server=1 and RPC credentials, then use mining or pool software that speaks getblocktemplate against your node’s RPC port, 25332. The whole 100 S256 reward is yours when you find a block.

Merged mining from block 17,500

From block 17,500, pools on other SHA-256 chains can merge-mine S256 at no cost to their hashrate. S256’s merge-mining chain ID is 598. Pool operators: see the pool integration notes and run S256 Core v3.0.1 or later.
